Meta announces AI Glasses Impact Grant winners to enhance independence in work, learning, and living

Meta is committed to creating technology that enhances human connection and empowers individuals globally. The company aims to equip everyone with the tools needed to realize their full potential. Today, Meta has revealed the winners of the AI Glasses Impact Grants, which will provide funding to 30 organizations throughout the United States that utilize AI glasses to address challenges in their communities and industries.

The initiative, launched in January, seeks to invest nearly $2 million directly into organizations engaged in this innovative work. It offers two types of grants: Accelerator Grants for organizations that are already expanding their proven impact with AI glasses and Catalyst Grants for developers creating applications for the glasses through Meta’s Device Access Toolkit. The selection criteria for the recipients included demonstrated impact, scalability, and relevance to areas where hands-free technology can make a significant difference, such as accessibility, workforce safety, education, agriculture, and economic opportunity. Nearly 500 applications were received, and the Catalyst Grant recipients will integrate their applications into Ray-Ban Meta glasses later this year, enhancing the glasses for all users.

In situations demanding both hands, full concentration, and real-time information—like working on a ladder, repairing machinery, or moving through a city in a wheelchair—AI glasses offer a safer, more efficient solution.

Innovative Projects

  • Strategic Workforce Development (SWD) (Missouri): Utilizing Meta AI glasses as hands-free coaching tools for those entering construction trades, providing real-time instruction and safety training.
  • Proformance-AI (California): Developing an AI copilot app for roadside emergency responders, offering mechanics diagnostic guidance through AI glasses for safer, quicker roadside assistance.
  • Onsite (Michigan): Creating a Meta AI glasses integration for field service contractors, allowing hands-free task management and technical support.
  • Mycelia Foundation (New Mexico): Equipping rural broadband installers with AI glasses for hands-free safety guidance at heights.
  • Agerpoint (North Carolina): Providing farmers with real-time crop health insights through AI glasses to ensure efficient, hands-free monitoring in the field.

Promoting Independence and Accessibility

  • OurLife Labs (California): In collaboration with Reality Hack (Massachusetts), developing a Meta AI glasses assistant for individuals with early-stage dementia, offering guidance for daily routines.
  • United Spinal Association (New York): Supplying AI glasses to wheelchair user advocates to document accessibility issues in public spaces, aiding ADA improvements.
  • Easter Seals Greater Houston’s BridgingApps Program (Texas): Conducting a pilot on the benefits of AI glasses for those with low vision, intellectual disabilities, and cognitive aging, paving the way for broader assistive technology use.

Future Developments

Later this year, Catalyst grant recipients like OurLife Labs, Proformance-AI, Immerse Inc., Onsite, and Agerpoint will integrate their applications into Ray-Ban Meta glasses using Meta’s Device Access Toolkit, broadening the glasses’ capabilities. All grant recipients will gather for the AI Glasses Impact Grant Celebration & Community Summit in New York City from July 27-29. This three-day event will connect grant recipients, developers, and stakeholders to collaborate and share innovations. The event will feature discussions, technical workshops, and honor the recipients, showcasing the transformative applications already in use.
