AirPods Pro introduces hearing test and aid features in Canada

The latest version of AirPods Pro includes a scientifically validated Hearing Test feature, now accessible to users throughout Canada. Furthermore, in certain provinces such as Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan, those experiencing mild to moderate hearing loss can activate an innovative Hearing Aid feature on the AirPods Pro 3.1 model.

The Hearing Aid feature is operational in provinces that allow the over-the-counter distribution of hearing aids. Apple is collaborating with each province to secure approval for this feature, aiming to make it accessible to users across all regions of Canada promptly.

Statistics Canada notes that nearly 20% of Canadians experience hearing challenges. Research indicates that untreated hearing loss can negatively impact overall wellbeing and is associated with a higher risk of social isolation and dementia.

Dr. Vincent Lin from the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre commented on the potential for significant impact in day-to-day life due to hearing loss. He highlights the convenience of the hearing health features on AirPods Pro, which allow users to self-assess their hearing and consider support options. These tools are available on devices that users already own, promoting accessible and less intimidating hearing care.

The Hearing Test feature leverages pure-tone audiometry to provide an intuitive experience that users can complete in approximately five minutes at home using their AirPods Pro and a compatible iPhone or iPad. Post-test, users receive a summary with a hearing level number for each ear, a classification, and relevant recommendations. This information, including the audiogram, is stored securely in the Health app and can be shared with healthcare providers for in-depth consultations.

The over-the-counter Hearing Aid capability, designed for users with mild to moderate hearing loss, further personalizes the listening experience on AirPods Pro in approved provinces. It uses the profile from the Hearing Test to deliver tailored sound adjustments in real-time, enhancing conversations and environmental awareness. This custom profile seamlessly integrates with other audio content across devices.

These features, supported by rigorous scientific validation, are available on both AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 models. They complement the existing Hearing Protection feature, which helps users avoid exposure to loud noises and includes a multiband high dynamic range algorithm for natural sound experience during live events.

Apple emphasizes privacy with their health features, ensuring that data in the Health app is encrypted and secure when the device is locked. Health data backed up to iCloud is encrypted in transit and at rest, and with default security settings, this data remains inaccessible to Apple.
